Norm Nelson, Inc. sells mainly to brokerage,
wholesale and direct chain customers. For many years, the existing
sales staff also sold product out of the packing shed to local
customers. In the summer of 1985 that the warehouse was remodeled
again to add the "Potato Shed"
store area. The store is open during the packing
/ shipping season and sells only Norm Nelson, Inc product.
Since the bulk of our crop is sold to customers outside Skagit Valley, this was
an opportunity to expand the local retail market and connect with customers in
our community. The “Potato Shed” handles sales anywhere from a 1#
to a 50# package to a full pallet of product loaded off the dock.
In the years since we have started the “Potato Shed”, the business
has increased nearly every year. Some long time associations have been created
with individuals and local restaurant businesses. Even people from 50 to
100 miles away will make a potato “run” to buy large quantities and
haul back to their neighbors. The “Potato Shed” is also used
by NNI to make contributions and donations to our community’s school, athletic
and charity programs. The Nelson family has supported many local families and
their organizations over the years. |
