September 2008

Greetings:

Here it is the middle of September and the 2008 harvest is just starting.  This is the annual update for the Norm Nelson, Inc. potato crop.  It was a very “slow” spring as the weather delayed our planting schedule and the early portion of our crop.  After a reasonable growing season our crop now looks good – just later than normal by 10 – 14 days.  We are anxious to get harvest underway and market the 2008 crop.

We will begin harvest with all three varieties – reds, whites, and yellows.  The purples require more days for maturity and will be ready sometime the first half of October.  Most varieties are the same as we grew last year.  All the whites are Cascades; most of the reds are the Chieftain variety with a small field of Colorado Rose.  Yellow varieties are again the Yukon Gold and Provento but also acreage of Satina.  The total potato acreage is nearly the same as past years with small changes between each of the varieties.  Our normal harvest season will have the white potatoes last until mid November.  The red, yellow and purple varieties are usually packed until March or April depending on yields since all are packed out of the storage facility.

We will maintain the same label line up with the “Double N” label as our long time premium quality label and the “Golden Seal” as the second label US#1 for the more price sensitive buyer.  The “Pedigree” label is used for our US#2 pack.  The packaging options are expanded this year as the bagger was converted to handle the poly/mesh style of bag.  You can check all our combinations of packaging on our web site www.doublenpotatoes.com and read more of the “Double N” story.

Another important update is the change in our sales staff.  Scott Wharton is now the other half of our sales team.  Scott is a 30 plus year veteran of the food service industry.  Call either Scott or myself and we will be take care of your colored potato needs!

Thanks again to all the customers that have been a part of the “Double N” program over the years.  As we begin another harvest season, we look forward to visiting again with customers from past years and look forward to new relationships.  We want our
“Double N” program to be an important part of your colored potato program.

Sincerely,

Myron Ayers, Sales Manager
